Trilogy 1: The Weeping Meadow
Aroview: The first part of an intended trilogy of films dealing with 20th century Greece, this monumental epic depicts the travails of a Greek refugee family who are driven from Odessa by the Red Army after WW1 and return to their own wartorn homeland.
Intermeshing the personal stories of two lovers - who shift partners, professions and alleigances - and the chaotic sweep of the historical backdrop, this is as loaded with haunting, awe-inspiring visuals as one would expect from the dir. of ULYSSES' GAZE, while the addition of a rich soundtrack of folk and popular music provides a welcome new dimension. Slow and sombre, this will not fulfil everyone's concept of 'entertainment', but as serious and compelling cinema, it is another essential work from the Greek master.
