Aroview: An Italian classic, concerning the decline of the 19th century Sicilian aristocracy - represented by Burt Lancaster- that fulfils its epic ambitions by mastery of the many resources of cinema.
Adapted from the novel by Giuseppe Lampedusa, the story of the profound power-shifts brought about by Garibaldi’s unification of Italy is told through a panorama of subplots and characters (acted by an international cast). Perhaps most famous for its climactic, hour-long ballroom scene which was described by Pauline Kael as – “one of the greatest of all passages in movies”. Rich and elegaic, nostalgic yet critical, this is perhaps the dir.’s greatest work. Restored version.

4 stars (Very Good) Certainly classic - but hard work - even if you read the famous novel first! Complex & rich. ~Sandy
5 stars (Exceptional) A rich blu-ray restoration. Yes, first viewing is hard work. Like 2001 it rewards further viewing. I enjoyed the commentary (in subtitled longer version) & English dubbed version featuring Lancaster's own voice. His best since Judgment at Nuremburg. ~EdMorbius
2 stars (Good Try) ~Anonz
