Cannibal Holocaust

Italy 1980, 94 minutes
Dir. Ruggero Deodato
Genres: Horror / Controversy

Topics: Cannibal.

Aroview: Enormously controversial apex of the Italian 'cannibal' horror subgenre, concerning an anthropologist who journeys to the Amazon to locate a film-crew who have gone missing during an attempt to document a reclusive Indian tribe.

Eventually he locates the tribe and obtains cans of the undeveloped footage they shot, which when screened reveals the shocking truth. Although proponents have defended the film for its grim social commentary on 'civilised vs. primitive' humanity, the work is chiefly known for its extremely realistic and gut-churning gore scenes, which run the gamut from disembowlments and castrations through to impalements, entrail-munching and some morally repugnant cruelty to animals (which was not faked).

As such, this film has not been passed by the New Zealand Classification Office, and is therefore unavailable.
