Aroview: One the few internationally-seen films from the African continent, this myth-like narrative concerns a young man of the Bambara culture of Mali, who journeys across a startling landscape and spiritual cosmos to defeat his father, an evil sorceror.
Told using a set of intriguing characters and magic symbols, this is underlain with genuine animistic beliefs and is uncompromising in forging its own aesthetic to express them. As strange and beguiling as Paradjanov's Armenian films.
