Inside Deep Throat
Aroview: Thoroughly eye-popping expose of the sordid and ridiculous tale of super-successful 1970s porno film DEEP THROAT: funded by the Mob, directed by a hairdresser, celebrated by liberals, condemned by conservatives, shot for $22 000 and ultimately grossing over $600 million.
Beyond the simple facts, dirs. Bailey and Barbato investigate the backgrounds and fates of those involved, including stars Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems, as the pansexual dreams of 1970s America devolved into a morass of drugs, rip-offs, protest and a massive pornography industry. Constructed from an array of interviews (John Waters, Camille Paglia, Norman Mailer and Dick Cavett), and scrappy montages of archival material, this communicates a satisfyingly undiluted aura of the times and a handful of memorable portraits.
