Aroview: An ambitious and mostly comfortable adaptation of the 1990s Broadway update of Puccini's LA BOHEME, in which a multi-racial mixture of New York bohemians in the East Village struggle with career, creativity, romance, drugs, AIDS and, of course, coming up with the rent money.
Retaining much of the original stage cast, this finds an entertaining path through what is admittedly a fairly dated late-1980s scenario, with softrock music, fire-escape dancing and air of glossy melancholy all carried over. If the emotional effect is rather muted, the music (produced by Rob Cavallo) displays an agreeably ecclectic taste.
