Aroview: Grimly intense and atmospheric 'Australian Western' - scripted by singer Nick Cave - is set the outback of the 1880s, where lawman Ray Winstone blackmails a recently arrested outlaw, Guy Pearce, into a rather fiendish 'proposition': hunt down his psychopathic older brother or see his younger sibling perish on the gallows.
Plotting the brutal reductiveness of the colonial mindscape and Australian natural environment, like DEADWOOD this savagely updates the Western genre but sets it in an appealing and, to New Zealanders, highly relevant, antipodean setting. Bearing Cave's unmistakable imprint of visceral carnage, mythic grandeur and sometimes transcendent beauty, his vision is realised with great skill by dir. Hillcoat and a superb cast.

5 stars (Exceptional) Bold, brutal and brilliant with an exceptional script, director, cinematography and cast. ~Wizzums
4 stars (Very Good) Beautifully shot brutality. In the greater part, taciturn. One almost begs for the ultimately predictable ending. ~procyon
5 stars (Exceptional) ~Regando
5 stars (Exceptional) “Are we misanthropes...?” “No... we’re a family!” Nick Cave’s riff on the Australian ‘western’ defines the genre. A stellar example of a single vision of hell coming through quite accurate history. Unmissable. Not for the faint... ~bikewrench
2 stars (Good Try) ~Anonz
