Miami Vice
Aroview: A brooding reprise of the cult 80s cop TV series with uber-stylist Michael Mann (HEAT) ramping up the serious atmospherics in a prolonged undercover assignment for Crockett and Tubbs (Farrell, Foxx) among a drug-dealing cartel operating in Florida.
Although over-weighty (and overlong), this stays refreshingly true to the flashy lifestyles, surfaces and existential violence of the original, as the boys are soon tunnelling into an international criminal ring and getting as privately disarrayed as ever, with Farrell's doomed affair with gangland moll Gong Li adding a crucial touch of melancholy. Like Mann's COLLATERIAL DAMAGE, this was shot on hi-def video making for a shadowy visual refit which stands as an essential, respectful homage.

3 stars (Good Enough) A decent DV revamp of the original TV series, although just as implausible, and at times just a little too 80s for its own good. ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) Much too long to remain interesting and distinct from the many others that are similar. Didn't need the romance. ~Tubbs
