Fountain, The
Aroview: A madly ambitious, visually splendid odyssey from dir. Darren Aronofksy, this will certainly intrigue fans of his earlier work, while sci-fi buffs will likely be either dazzled or just plain bamboozled.
Hugh Jackman stars in three interconnected roles: as a sixteenth century Spanish conquistador who is ordered by his queen (Rachel Weisz) to find the Tree of Life; a surgeon researching a drug that could save his wife (also Weisz) from brain cancer 500 years in the future; and, 500 years from now, a bald, monkish creature floating in space who is attempting to reunite himself with lost wife (still Weisz).
A willful attempt at Kubrick-ian gravitas, the director takes the metaphysical speculation and special effects found in "Pi" to such a level, though perhaps biting off more than he can chew with a romantic dimension, the demands of a cryptic, labrynthine plot, and overspill of CGI trickery.
