Aroview: A strident and admirable account of Greek scholar Hypatia, whose principles and pagan beliefs attracted the ire of Christians in 4th century Alexandria.
After years of project development, Spanish auteur Alejandro Amenabar bolsters the trappings of the lavish historical epic with characteristic integrity as he ambitiously harmonizes its weighty astronomical and religious themes. Rachel Weisz is superb in the key role of the feisty feminine philosopher, leading a cast of relatively unknown thesps who collectively add to the production's rigourous quest for authenticity. 2 stars (Good Try) Found it shallow and pretentious, which is never fun when the subject has real potential for depth. Perhaps a sign that the writer/director lacked real understanding of the subject matter so all he could do was give it the cliched once-over. ~s36e175
1 star (Turkey) ~JohnSpecialK
2 stars (Good Try) It has some worthy scenes, mainly those that contain intelligent discussion, but for too much time the screenplay prefers to concentrate on religious bigotry and the bloodshed that often goes with it. ~Tubbs
