Akeelah and the Bee
Aroview: A fictional African-American take on the SPELLBOUND craze, with a firm but fair Laurence Fishburne coaching an underprivileged 11-year-old girl to the National Spelling Bee competition.
It’s an oft-told inspirational tale of overcoming adversity, but there’s a quiet feeling of desperation and above all, empowerment, that makes this film fascinating to watch.
