Aroview: Gerard Depardieu works his rotund charm as a journeyman lounge singer, crooning his way through half-empty nightclubs while forging an unlikely relationship with a much younger, jilted divorcee (de France).

Eschewing obvious sentiment and romantic clichés, this convincingly converges the lives of two disaffected souls through an appreciation of small human moments and a note-perfect tempo that’s never hurried or out-of-sync. Fine Gallic understatement also allows the palpable chemistry between Depardieu and de France to radiate.
