Aroview: Static-haired sport jester du jour Will Ferrell stars in this 70s-era basketball comedy about a former disco one hit wonder turned b-ball player-owner trying to revive the fortunes of his bottom-of-the-barrel team.

Striking a similar tone to KINGPIN and cribbing liberally from the swearwordy SLAP SHOT, this is neither the slam dunk send-up it aspires to be, nor as laughably ludicrous as BLADES OF GLORY. But while the formulaic script comes close to fouling out on several occasions, the film rebounds through a series of silly but shrewd slapstick gags, with Ferrell ably assisted by the solid support cast. The period detail is spot-on, too.
