Aroview: Surprisingly gutsy and sure-footed urban crime drama from actor Ben Affleck, who stays behind the camera to direct his brother, Casey, as a rookie private eye hired to investigate the fraught disappearance of a small girl.

Based on the novel by MYSTIC RIVER author Dennis Lehane, it balances combustible (if slightly contrived) detective melodrama with gritty characterisations and the authentic rhythms of working-class Boston, and finally resonates long after the credit roll with a disarming, morally complex sting in its tale.

2 stars (Good Try) Not a convincing screenplay but there is a very good final scene and some of the characters are interesting. The best performance is from Amy Ryan. ~Tubbs
