Brick Lane

Aroview: Multi-layered drama based on the popular Monica Ali novel focuses on the transformative tale of a young woman forced to leave her Bangladeshi village for an arranged marriage and a lacklustre existence in back-blocks London.

Scaling down the novel’s scope for a more subdued portrayal of the modern immigrant experience, this is perhaps a touch too constrained to fully sustain its thematic weight, but is bolstered by a pair of strong lead performances, while dir. Gavron’s poetic sensibility and patient pacing gives rise to unforced and often unexpected moments of poignancy.
