Diary of the Dead
Aroview: Genre-king Romero's latest sojourn puts the digital camera in the hands of a group of film-school wannabes who, while shooting their own DIY gore-fest, discover real horror in the form of the brain-eating undead.
Romero attempts to turn the evolution of his brilliant NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD on its head mock-horror-mentary style, injecting every line with clever, post-modern self-awareness. This works very well from an analytical point of view, however all the nods and winks sacrifice a vital scare factor. Perhaps it is Romero's intention to finally bury his zombies once and for all in this piece that feels more essay than cinema.

3 stars (Good Enough) Taking the 'indie documentary' approach and feel, this feels less Romero than a homage to Romero. Still, there are laughs to be had, and other features to appreciate, even if there is nothing particularly fresh. ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) There are that many zombie films that the zombies just walk from film set to film set. It is time we shot this genre in the head so it doesn't come alive again. ~Tubbs
