Love Comes Lately
Aroview: This well-spun octogenarian yarn dwells on the boundless sexual pursuits of an elderly cad (Tausig), whose lust for life jeopardises the relationship with his long-time companion (Perlman).
Based on Isaac Bashevis Singer (both in work and spirit), dir. Schutte takes elements of the Yiddish writer’s personality and blends them magically with three of his best-known stories. The resulting film doesn’t shy away from its subject’s more unflattering traits (namely, his treatment of women), but is balanced finely enough to allow its wistful and comic sensibility to remain in focus, thus lightening the film’s overall tone.
