Cure
Aroview: Delivering one of the great, unsung horror movies, dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa plumbs the depths of societal malaise with this novel take on serial killings, centred on ordinary citizens hypnotised into committing random acts of murder by a mysterious drifter.
Masterfully edited and blanketed in bleak, dread-inducing overtones (thanks largely to the decrepit, soul-destroying locations, the antithesis of Tokyo’s neon futurism), Kurosawa’s film manages to achieve both atmospheric chills and unsettling psychological inquiry within the mould of a stringent policier – a high point in the director's underrated (and criminally underseen) oeuvre.
