Whatever Works
Aroview: Caustic comedian Larry David teams up with Woody Allen in this cringe-inducing black comedy about a cranky, middle-aged non-conformist who reluctantly takes a clueless young runaway under his domestic and intellectual wing.
David as actor is a gifted wit and improviser in his CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, but here the lines are gracelessly stuffed into his mouth by a cynical and very dated (early 80's) Woody Allen script, and it's as uncomfortable to watch as it is for him to perform. All the more disappointing for following Allen's late-career high-point VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA, this is recommended only for rubber-neckers and hardened "anything goes" fans of either man.
