Aroview: Enthralling true-life story traces the life of acclaimed ballet dancer Li Cunxin from his impoverished upbringing in communist China to the events leading up to his defection to the United States.
One for audiences more than the critics, as they say, it's a broadly appealing, sweeping melodrama that dances along not unsimilar lines to BILLY ELLIOT, and guided by the consummate hand of veteran Australian dir. Beresford. Li's artistic journey runs nicely in parallel with his ideological transformation, and the fleet-footed dance sequences never get tired.

2 stars (Good Try) A patchy screenplay is helped through by the dancing segments. The final scenes are soppy. ~Tubbs
