USA 2009, 90 minutes
Dir. Grant Heslov
Rating: [M]
Genres: Comedy / War
Topics: Mind-bender.
Aroview: George Clooney stars as a tell-all Special Forces operative in this mind-boggling, fact-based military farce based on the U.S. Army’s attempt to train soldiers in the psychic art of killing goats, among other telepathic skills.
Reaching for the off-beat style of humour cultivated so successfully by the Coen brothers, dir. Heslov’s movie delivers as a hilarious comedy-of-the-absurd, though is perhaps found wanting as a would-be war satire. Some truly out-there performances by the cast, however, compensate for the lack of comedic edge or smarts, with Jeff Bridges in particular a hoot as a wigged-out Vietnam vet not far removed from his memorable turn as ‘The Dude’.

3 stars (Good Enough) ~normfilmbuff
4 stars (Very Good) One of my favourite comedies of the year, this has the same understated sense of humour as the Coens’ 'Burn After Reading', with some right-on-the-money performances by Clooney, Bridges, and Spacey. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) A truly hilarious film with great performances from Clooney, Bridges and Spacey that is let down by a pretty shoddy ending. ~Wizzums
3 stars (Good Enough) A very good satire of the military although the screenplay does weaken out in the latter stages. ~Tubbs
