Cairo Time
Aroview: A sturdy, old-fashioned picaresque romance set in the heat of modern day Cairo, with Patricia Clarkson as an American wife who falls under the spell of Egypt and a handsome Arab colleague of her absentee husband.
Meeting all the criteria of the “middle-aged fling” genre (all the while paying homage to such classics as BRIEF ENCOUNTER and SUMMERTIME), but not be confused with the likes of EAT PRAY LOVE and other shameless western tourist pornography, the film shows rare sophistication and sensitivity in its storytelling and, most importantly, cultural awareness of the Muslim world. Granted, there’s still an element of fantasy to the exotic love affair that takes flight, though for anyone who’s traveled solo and been swept off their feet – either by country, or person – this will ring true and resonate long after.
