Aroview: Casey Affleck disturbs as a psychotic small town sheriff struggling to cover his bloody tracks in this grim, stylish neo-noir.
Adroitly directed by the ever-versatile Michael Winterbottom, the film strives to capture the unseemliness of back-country life while playing up the expected double-crosses and best laid plans of classic film noir – an interesting, if off-key blend of genres that’s more muddled than moody as an end product. More attention grabbing, if just as off-putting, is its nihilistic streak, which in cleverly subverting the movie's outwardly commercial appearance, remains faithful to the chilling 1952 Jim Thompson novel, a sort of ‘American Psycho’ for its time.

2 stars (Good Try) Has the right ingredients for a down and dirty pulp-noir, and there are things to admire... yet the deliberate genre subversions and emotional provocations ultimately prove too ambitious - not to mention smug and off-putting - for its own good. ~fairbrother
