Aroview: A smart, ground level conspiracy thriller based on the true story of an undercover CIA operative (Watts) whose identity was suspiciously leaked after her diplomat husband (Penn) openly criticized the Bush administration.
Applying the propulsive, on-the-fly immediacy of his original Bourne film, dir. Liman keeps the plot moving along as if it were breaking news, and although the scenario is ripe for overacting – and Sean Penn certainly chews the scenery – it remains fascinatingly grounded in the everyday, with domestic scenes between husband and wife dramatically rewarding and a welcome contrast to the sensational headlines their predicament has been ripped from.
