Red Riding Hood
Aroview: Amanda Seyfried plays the eponymous fairytale heroine lusted after by a sinister werewolf in this deliriously overheated horror-fantasy pitched at the Twilight crowd.
Feeding off the hit vampire franchise’s supernatural romanticism filtered through a teenager’s sexual awakening, Hardwicke (incidentally, director of the first Twilight movie) serves up an exaggerated visual feast to complement the script's heavy-handed subtext – a none-too-subtle unpacking of the Red Riding tale as a metaphor for ripened sexuality. Much of this will blow over the heads of the demographic it is squarely aimed at, though fans of baroque horror and/or brooding romance should find plenty to revel in, even if the film does take itself way too seriously.
