Aroview: This potently atmospheric "Victorian" thriller boasts a suitably wired Anton Walbrook as a repressed patriarch who torments his wife in an effort to drive her insane and claim her property and fortune.

Densely draped in shadows and fog and the heaviest of patterned interiors, this dark tale of British class anxiety was very nearly lost when MGM remade it as a glossier Hollywood melodrama, and demanded that all prints of this original be destroyed.
