Aroview: Paul Giamatti fans will find much to enjoy in this bittersweet character piece in which he plays a jaded TV producer who reflects on his varied successes and failures, and the three key women in his life through the decades.
Mordecai Richler's much-loved novel is here shaped into a satisfying, sensitive screen adaptation, with Giamatti nailing a character who's forgivable through all his flaws, and Rosamund Pike a stand-out among his suitors. At once cynical and big-hearted, this is a grown-up drama that comes stamped with a seal of Canadian quality.

5 stars (Exceptional) After days of humdrum viewing this refreshingly grownup entertainment came as a real tonic. Understated yet evocative design and photography and a superlative cast (especially Hoffman and the incandescent Pike). ~HiFi
2 stars (Good Try) You need to be a Giamatti fan as he's on screen for over 2 hours giving at times an overwrought performance. Hard to empathize with his character. ~Tubbs
4 stars (Very Good) ~Milana
