Weekend
Aroview: A thematically rich, dramatically articulate gay romance between a semi-closeted man and a free-spirited cynic who casually hook up over a weekend, only to become more attached to one another than expected.
Robustly scripted, yet performed as if improvised on the spot, this also manages to pose direct questions about the representation of homosexuality in mainstream media while cleverly presenting itself as a ‘common romance’, one essentially no different from the dozens of talky American love stories to lay the groundwork. Like BEFORE SUNRISE, the rewards are both intellectual and emotional, with the film’s unusual self-awareness the key its subversiveness through familiarity.
