Fresh Meat
Aroview: A cannibal comedy with a Maori twist, this spirited romp throws various genres into its gory blender when a gang of criminals accidentally invade the suburban residence of a family of gourmet man-eaters.
At its best when gleefully satirising Maori custom and political correctness, the script by celebrated writer Briar Grace-Smith, and is smarter than it might appear, though the execution at times is too eager to milk the laughs for all their low-brow worth. Temuera Morrison, who smoothly parodies his iconic turn in ONCE WERE WARRIORS, and Kate Elliot as a sultry bad-ass stand out, as do appealing newcomers like Jack Sergent-Shadbolt and Kahn West. Recommended for those with a taste for bad taste and/or human kai.
