In the Mouth of Madness
Aroview: Sam Neill is uncannily good as an insurance investigator who uncovers a diabolical alternate reality when he is sent to locate a vanished best-selling novelist. A measure of silliness prevents this from becoming the classic it could have been.

5 stars (Exceptional) H P Lovecraft meets John Carpenter in 90's multi idea literature-society-simulacra mind-f. What if the Wachowskis remade this? ~Dr_'n'
4 stars (Very Good) This movie is absurd but everyone involved with it is so committed that it stays intensely watchable all the way through, despite its silliness. The result is best described as Lovecraft by the Way of Stranger than Fiction. ~Sevenhead
3 stars (Good Enough) More dreary than dreadful on first viewing, the utterances of Sutter Cane (Prochnow) sustained the horror long after the movie finished. Carpenter's soundtrack was more heavy metal guitar than cool synths, more distracting than engaging. ~gnomon
