Aroview: A bleak but compelling allegory of modern Russia is lensed through a fisherman's struggle against bureaucracy, corruption and demons of his own as he attempts to defend his rural family estate from state possession. The murky, vodka-soaked human dramas are effectively juxtaposed against imposing images of the remote, majestic landscape.

4 stars (Very Good) The little guy ruthlessly and remorselessly crushed by vested interests. Hobbes Leviathan is bleak. The book of Job is bleak. This movie is bleak. Bleak but beautiful. ~Anon
4 stars (Very Good) Ink black Russian beauty. ~Regando
3 stars (Good Enough) Aleksey Serebryakov's alcohol-soaked performance is terrific. The screenplay is played out in Russian time but is helped by the superb location shooting. ~Tubbs
