Beguiled, The
“Told with surgical precision and savage grace.”~David Ehrlich, IndieWire
Aroview: This exquisitely designed Southern pot-boiler set during the Civil War within a claustrophobic girls' seminary in Virginia marks a return to form for director, Sofia Coppola.
When a handsome but wounded Union soldier is found on the school grounds, the residents are conflicted, setting into motion a series of irrevocable disruptions. This is another adaptation of the 1966 novel by Thomas P. Cullinan, but differs markedly from the Don Siegel film by portraying the wounded officer's intentions more ambiguously. Rather than emphasise the Union vs Confederate component, Coppola sticks to common ground with another expert exploration of female oppression and desire.
