Dir. Sofia Coppola
Rating: [R16]
Genres: Drama / Independent
Aroview: An aptly seductive adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ acclaimed romantic tragedy set in a sleepy Michigan community in the mid-70s. Kirsten Dunst headlines as one of five teenage sisters, whose beauty, isolation and untimely passing become the stuff of local legend. Nostalgic in the best sense of the term, dir. Sophia Coppola’s genuine affinity for the material seeps from every luminous frame, while the soundtrack integrates well-chosen period pop with the retro-pastiche of French electronic outfit, AIR.

4 stars (Very Good) Set in the 70s, four Lisbon sisters are kept isolated by their over-protective parents after the suicide of their youngest sister. The girls bond tightly with one another, and view the world as outsiders. A mysterious and heartbreaking tale. ~GenXGirl
2 stars (Good Try) I assume the director is trying to bring attention to teenage suicides - NZ had the highest rate in the developed world in 2016. I am unfamiliar with the novel but well done if she is. Kirsten Dunst is head & shoulders above the rest of the young cast. ~Tubbs
