aka: Twilight of the Ice Nymphs, The Heart of the World, Archangel
Canada 1990-2000, 91, 6, 90 minutes
Dir. Guy Maddin
Genres: Cult, Drama, Comedy / Fantasy
Aroview: Three films from Canada's silent movie alchemist, all deliciously dreamlike examples of the cult filmmaker's brilliant oeuvre.
Twilight of the Ice Nymphs (1998, 91 min):
A fantasy romance inspired by the novel Pan by Norwegian author Knut Hamsun and the short story "La Vénus d'Ille" (1837) by Prosper Mérimée. A recently released political prisoner returns to his mythical homeland of Mandragora, where the sun never sets. Once there, sexual tensions threaten to erupt on his sister's ostrich farm. Maddin himself has expressed dissatisfaction with the film, however it will remain appealing for core fans.
The Heart of the World (2000, 6 min):
A short film commissioned for Toronto Film Festival's "Preludes" programme in 2000, which runs at breakneck speed through hundreds of shots, and packs in enough plot for a feature-length film. Inspired by the artistic movement Russian Constructivism, and Russian propaganda films, the story follows two brothers who both lust after the same woman, a Russian state scientist who discovers that world is about to end.
Achangel (1990, 90 min):
SOUTHPARK writer Kyle McCulloch is cast in this beautifully creepy feature set in the town of Archangel in the far North of Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution. Shot in black and white on 16mm film, and modeled off the "part-talkie" style of early cinema from the late 20's.
