aka: Beauty of the Day
France 1967, 100 minutes
Dir. Luis Bunuel
In French with English subtitles
Rating: [M]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Cult, Drama, Classics
Aroview: Cool and elegant comedy of manners about a virginal newlywed who works the day shift in a high class brothel. Bunuel's surrealist sleight-of-hand is on form in this wry depiction of bourgeois sensibilities and personal desires.

5 stars (Exceptional) Repressed sexuality with a dash of Catholic guilt has rarely been so well presented on screen as it is in Buñuel's classic film. Catherine Deneuve is fantastically frosty in one of her iconic roles. ~The Myrka

3 stars (Good Enough) 1967 c.f. today, seems dated & prudish. Failure to get past "meaningful glances" forces the viewer to create her fantasy without really getting into her character. "A Clockwork Orange" (1971) & other films from this era have more depth. ~Sandy
5 stars (Exceptional) A must see! ~emjay
