Last Days of Disco
Aroview: Not so much a nostalgia trip as a literate comedy of manners a la 1980s Manhattan, dissecting the sashays on the social dancefloor among a troupe of acerbic, slightly immature college-grads you might recognise from writer/director Whit Stillman's other work (METROPOLITAN, BARCELONA).
Lending charisma and substance, Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale, both on the cusp of adulthood and quailing before monogamy and yuppie-dom, escape by night into the 'freedoms' of mirrorball-land. Ensuring matters don't become too cerebral, a soundtrack of classic grooves contributes more than simply a sense of time and place.
