Eyes Wide Shut
Aroview: A fascinating and convoluted Freudian thriller, Stanley Kubrick's swansong has elicited praise, condemnation and baffled dumb-looks, though its reputation may grow in time.
Straight-laced Manhattan-ite Tom Cruise has a crisis over his marriage to Nicole Kidman and embarks on a strange, symbolically-charged night-out/mind-trip to exorcise his demons of jealousy. In many ways this harks back to the 60s/70s sexual explorations of Polanski and Roeg, while bearing the lugubrious style and icy vision of humankind that are this director's specialties.

4 stars (Very Good) A film that will probably never be fully understood, this Freudian dream world is intriguing and strange, yet at the same time, strangely pedestrian. A very hard film to rate or critique with its many different elements, ups and downs... ~Tom H
