Aroview: Striking the tone of much of his subsequent work, Ken Loach's debut film gives a semi-documentary edge to the story of 'poor cow' Carol White, a young barmaid who drifts through a not-so-pretty flipside to 60s 'Swinging' London. Her flings include petty-crims Terence Stamp and Malcolm McDowell (also his debut). From the novel by Nell Dunn.

4 stars (Very Good) Some wonderful (time capsule) working class scenes. On Carol's performance rested the film - she toughed it out incl. a few smacks across the chops. Loach went on to do better but many directors would have given their right arm for a start like this. ~Tubbs
