Aroview: Set during the 1970s garbage strike in Glasgow, this intensely stylish though sombre Scottish childhood tragedy features an unusual mix of the surreal, the poetic and the squalid. Some astonishingly vivid scenes combine with extraordinary child acting (William Eadie) to present an excellent alternative to the more sentimental versions of growing up in abject poverty.

4 stars (Very Good) Told through the eyes of 12-year-old James, set in 70's Glasgow, a boy haunted by a secret. From a poor rat-infested neighbourhood, his family live in hope of moving to newly built council flats. Beautiful and poetic coming-of-age drama. ~GenXGirl
