Garden of the Finzi-Continis
Aroview: Remarkable comeback for dir. De Sica after being written off by the critics, this winner of 1971s Best Foreign Film Oscar recreates the tragically glamorous life of a rich Italian-Jewish family as WWII starts to lap against their garden walls. Similar in atmosphere to Visconti, but in concentrating on the rituals of young love, it’s subtler and more elegaic.
