Aroview: Set during the German retreat from Italy in 1944, this tragicomedy of War carries a magical nostalgia by being told through the memories of woman who was a small girl at the time. Seeking to escape retribution by the local fascists, a small band of villagers take to the Tuscan hills to try to cross over to the advancing Americans and save their lives. Realistic in viewpoint, earthy in humour and visually poetic, its one of the great films of the 1980s.
