Storytelling
Aroview: Continuing to plumb the depths of controversy, the dir. of HAPPINESS tells more stories of the depressed and cruel inhabitants of American suburbia, laying on a thick black humour that tends to either satiate or alienate. Dividing his film into ‘Fiction’ and ‘Non-fiction’ halves, Solondz opens with the power-struggles inside a class of creative-writing hopefuls, before following a documentary-maker who has turned to exploiting his chosen subjects: an argumentative Jewish family. Apparently a reflection on his own creative preferences for taboo, non-PC subject-matter.
