Aroview: Betraying the odds after the lackluster “Hannibal”, this accomplished ‘prequel’ based on Thomas Harris’ novel of the same name more than hold its own against the benchmark thriller of the 1990s, “The Silence of the Lambs”.
Edward Norton plays a young FBI profiler whose special skills and experience are called upon to track down a killer known as the “Tooth Fairy”, but not without the crucial assistance and dubious charms of old foe, Hannibal the Cannibal. Grisly without being gratuitous, feelings of déjà vu are largely warded off by muscular, intelligent plotting (Harris’ book is a minor classic of its kind), and a to-die-for Hollywood cast. Hats off to light action director Brett Ratner, also, who here conclusively earns his dramatic stripes.

4 stars (Very Good) Red Dragon is a return to the same psychological suspense roots of 'Silence of the Lambs', with Ratner eliciting great performances - most notably, Hopkins and Fiennes - and keeping us guessing throughout. ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) No, sorry, despite having the same writer this doesn't hold its own against 'Silence of the Lambs' - it's a hollow, ham-fisted embarrassment. Avoid this, read the book. ~HiFi
2 stars (Good Try) The plot was unconvincing. There is a strong combined British and American cast but most of the screen time is taken up by Norton. ~Tubbs
