When Strangers Appear
Aroview: A piquant little thriller set at a lonely country rest-stop - Foxton standing in for Oregon - with dir. Reynold’s (HEAVEN, THE UGLY) visual classiness again his main asset.
Radha Mitchell plays a disaffected local girl who’s drawn into a violent score-settling between various customers (Barry Watson, Josh Lucas) of her roadside diner, for whom her sympathies waver, also holding off the ugly attentions of local sheriff Kevin Anderson. Reminiscent of the films of the Coen Brothers and John Dahl, this ultimately lacks their range and precision, though Reynold’s flair for set-pieces and nasty characters is memorable.
