USA 2002, 109 minutes
Dir. Gore Verbinski
Rating: [R16]
Genres: Horror / Paranorma
Feat. Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, Brian Cox
Aroview: Fitfully creepy American remake of the influential Japanese horror film that surprisingly manages to replicate the foreboding (and uniquely Japanese) ambience that made the original so indelible.
As the journalist investigating and cursed by THAT videotape, Naomi Watts follows the plot map of the original with the odd deviation intended to exploit the chill factor (an added sequence of a disturbed horse is a standout). Purists might find it hard to fall under the spell of a “copy”, but otherwise it’s certain to prickle the spines of those weaned on the smug, ironic horror of the post-“Scream” era.

3 stars (Good Enough) Scary American remake that fails to add much to the Japanese original but retains and recreates most of what is creepy. Not particularly imaginative with the frightening child premise, but it is a remake after all... ~Tom H
3 stars (Good Enough) Not too bad - it has a good base to work on in the "Ring" (1998). ~Tubbs
1 star (Turkey) Take a foreign-language film with an elegantly simple premise, douse it liberally in special effects and over-explanations, turn the scariest ending of all time into "a damp child looked at me" and voila, Hollywood remake. ~Pearce
Includes and experimental short from dir. Gore Verbinski.
