A romantic tragedy with a difference - the paths of two men become entwined by the respective women in their lives who both, through different circumstances, exist in a coma. With four equally intriguing characters, an unusual structure and audacious set pieces (incl. a dramatic bull-fight sequence and a silent short film pastiche) this is typically entertaining and easy-on-the-eye, but its melancholic theme about the elusiveness of love shows a director growing old gracefully, while losing none of his edge or status as one of the most important auteurs of his generation.
