Return of the Secaucus 7
Aroview: In his feature debut, writer-director John Sayles demonstrates a wisdom way beyond his years with this ‘do-it-yourself’ ensemble piece that came to spearhead the American ‘independent’ film movement of the 80s and 90s.
Also a direct (and obvious) inspiration for the Hollywood hit, THE BIG CHILL, this too is about a group of politicised high-school friends of the late 1960s who, now approaching thirty, reunite over a summer weekend. Brimming with Sayles’ characteristically rich (and atypically funny) dialogue and admirable humanism, this stands as more than a curiosity for fans of his work, and rewarding for anyone else who ever reflected on their youthful ideals.
