USA 2003, 139 minutes
Dir. Gore Verbinski
Rating: [M] Supernatural themes & violence
Genres: Action/Adventure / Adventure, Fantasy
Topics: Swashbuckler.
Aroview: A terrific, tongue-in-cheek action romp set in the pirate days of the Caribbean, with Johnny Depp leading the charge as a madcap, slyly ironic freebooter looking to regain his vessel.
Updating the swashbucklers of Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, this is equally (if not more) spectacular, affectionately overplaying the many stereotypes of genre for comic effect. The setting of ghost-ships, priggish British Navy types and violent sea-battles is satisfyingly fantastical in its effect, the obligatory romance between Bloom and Knightley providing a necessary complement. Maybe a little overlong, but otherwise a winner all the way.

4 stars (Very Good) Fun and creepy. Barbarossa is the best "pirates" villain, and I look forward to him returning in the fourth. ~dr.strangelove
4 stars (Very Good) Hugely enjoyable. Depp and Rush are great. ~Wizzums
5 stars (Exceptional) ~atsophie
3 stars (Good Enough) The series is consistently good and entertaining helped in no small way by the quality in the support casting of the likes of Pryce and Rush. This voyage is a bit too long, however. ~Tubbs
