Aro Recommended Why has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?

South Korea 1989, 137 minutes
Dir. Bae Yong-kyun
In Korean with English subtitles
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama

Topics: Religion, Philosophy.

Aroview: A mystical journey into the riddles and symbols of Zen Buddhism through various characters ensconced in a remote monastery.

Loosely threaded by a quest for enlightment and learning among two devotees and their 'master', this uses beautifully composed images as metaphors to present the unanswerable questions of worldly existence. Slow, and often puzzling, but a unique (and repeatable) experience.
