Laurel Canyon
Aroview: Dropping in on the LA music scene, the writer-director of HIGH ART returns to her pet theme of conservatism yielding to a bohemianism, but here, in groupie-like fashion, seems seduced by the trappings of ‘cool’ without being able to find a genuine connection.
An uptight Christian Bale and his bookish fiancĂ© (Beckinsale) are pushed further apart while residing at the luxury pad of his mother, a free-spirited record producer who’s having a fling with a boy-in-the-band. Frances McDormand eats up this role as the film’s most engaging character, but the script lacks the crucial detail to support any of its name cast.
